In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how Physical Education humiliation can affect you later in life. Did you know that being embarrassed in phys ed can haunt you later in life causing you to hate exercise and become less active. PE should focus on connecting physical activity with fun for your child. But some PE teachers are frustrated drill sergeants and take that out on the kids. If you want your child to love activity then it might be a good idea to take a peek in his/her PE class. Make sure they are leaving some time for unstructured play and that the class is not too over organized. And be sure the instructor is not using embarrassment or humiliation as a motivating tool to get the kids moving. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share Dr Fitness’ favorite meal recipe. If you guessed it involves fish you would be correct. This meal is built around 3-6 ounces of omega 3 rich smoked salmon or flavored tuna – your choice. And if you guessed lots of veggies then you are right again. Add this to the fish: avocado, mushrooms, onions, walnuts, craisins, and chinese noodles to give it some crunch. It doesn’t get any better than that for the doctor. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend award winning health journalist Robert Davis, author of The Healthy Skeptic. Robert
is kind of like the MythBusters guys for the health and fitness industry. Today he shared his thoughts about anti-aging clinics and their controversial human growth hormone programs. Robert and Dr Fitness discussed the recent NY Times article profiling Cenegenics, a popular anti-aging clinic. These kind of clinics take advantage of the law that says growth hormones can be legally prescribed if there is a deficiency in the patient – but as you age your levels decrease naturally so a doctor can almost always show that the patient is deficient. These clinics usually tout some anecdotal evidence of success and downplay some of the side effects of using hgh or human growth hormone, testosterone, etc. Side effects which can range from joint pain to diabetes. If you are considering using these kind of anti-aging methods please learn from the women who used hormone replacement therapy. While that therapy was used for decades it wasn’t until recently that results revealed that the risk of stroke and cancer outweighed any benefits of the treatment. Be careful when putting hormones into your body. To learn more about what Robert is up to go to www.everwell.com
