Don’t Use Laxatives For Weight Loss

Thursday, November 26th, 2009 6:06 pm

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explains the truth about laxatives. There are two kinds of laxatives used to relieve constipation – oral and rectal. Some people think that laxatives can be used for weight loss to help you cleanse your system. They really aren’t meant for this kind of use or any kind of long term use. How To Burn The Calories From Your Thanksgiving Day Meal

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 6:04 pm

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some ways to burn some Thanksgiving Day calories. Start the morning off speed cleaning your home. Cleaning your house at a fast pace with holiday music blaring is a great way to burn lots of calories and get a clean home. Volunteer to feed the homeless. Putting food on plates doesn’t seem like it burns a lot of calories but feeding the homeless requires a lot more than that. Someone has to lift the boxes of food and move them to the tables – it might as well be you. Run a charity road race before the big meal. And if all else fails play a big family football game after you eat. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Nutrition Tips From The Super Bowl Champs Pittsburgh Steeler’s Sports Dietitian Leslie Bonci

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 7:05 am

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Leslie Bonci, sports Dietitian for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Pirates. She is also the author of the new book Sports Nutrition for Coaches. On the show she shared some great nutrition tips for athletes and their trainers. Some of the common mistakes she said that trainers make with their athletes are not giving them enough information regarding how food and fluids can improve their performance. She says that since different sports have different metabolic demands that each athletes food and fluid requirements are different – so it is important to eat and drink for your needs. She also said that their is too much emphasis on protein consumption and not enough on eating carbohydrates. She isn’t a big fan of not eating before workouts then drinking protein shakes afterward. She says trainers also have to be aware of eating disorders in athletes especially those in weight class sports like wrestling and gymnastics. She says planning meals before working out is critical.  To learn more about Leslie and her book please go to www.sportsmedicine.upmc.com
