And that bag of frozen vegetables that seemed like a good idea but you have not figured out the exact right meal for them is perfect for your next dinner. Thaw them and put them in a salad or soup or even try doing what Dr Fitness loves is roast them on a cookie sheet after you spritz them with olive oil. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Gary Taubes Explains The Difference Between Good Calories, Bad Calories

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 6:05 am

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with award winning science journalist Gary Taubes, author of the controversial book Good Calories, Bad Calories. Fats, Carbs and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health. He believes that the fewer refined carbohydrates we eat, the leaner we will be because carbs increase insulin levels which causes obesity, increases your hunger and decreases your metabolic efficiency. Not only that but he says that refined carbohydrates, starches and sugars are the most likely dietary causes of Alzheimer’s, cancer and other diseases. He says exercise does not make us lose excess fat – it just makes us hungry. And obesity is the result of excess fat accumulation not overeating and not a sedentary lifestyle. So according to Gary eat all the protein you want, he says their is no upper limit on your protein consumption – just avoid the carbs and you’ll lose weight and also be healthier. Put down the broccoli and pick up the pork rinds! His mostly protein based eating plan is a favorite of Atkins and South Beach diet lovers like Jimmy Moore with Livin La Vida  Low Carb www.livinlavidalowcarb.com . You can find Gary’s book on Amazon and in bookstores everywhere.

How To Read Egg Labels

Monday, September 28th, 2009 6:59 pm

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to read egg labels. Since the FDA likes to put labels on all foods, eggs have not escaped their scrutiny. So now all you have to figure out is what all these new labels mean. Omega 3 Fortified means the hens were fed omega 3s in their feed, which therefore make their eggs omega fortified. When an egg is said to come from free range or cage free hen that means the hens have a less stressful, healthier lifestyle which in turns makes a healthier egg – an egg with similar attributes of an egg from the good old days when chickens and horses ran free.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Shop Smarter to Lose Weight

Thursday, September 24th, 2009 6:28 pm

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to shop smart for weight loss. There are lots of things you can do at the grocery store to help you lose weight – running sprints down each aisle doesn’t have to be one of them. Avoid sugar free and fat free snacks – those snacks don’t really fill you  up, are filled with chemicals and just make you crave more junk food.  If you crave something sweet – eat some fruit. Experiment with spices to add flavor to your meals. But smaller quantities – this may cost more money but it will cost you less calories. Make a list and stick to it – pre-planning meals ahead of time and shopping for those ingredients is the ticket to weight loss success. And don’t shop hungry – too many temptations when you are vulnerable will invariably lead to buying something you’ll regret later. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
